Surname Dictionary

Marnane Quite numerous: Tipperary-Limerick etc. Ir. Ó Marannáin. Variant of Murnane, q.v.
Murnane fairly numerous: Limerick-Clare-Cork etc. Ir. Ó Murnáin. This may derive from muirneach, lovable, but Woulfe says it is a corruption of Manannán, otherwise the Irish sea-god. In this connection, see Marrinan. Another possible root is maranach, thoughtful. The name has, in some cases, in S W Munster become Warren, q.v. MIF.
Ó Murnáin Murnane: cuíosach líonmhar: Luimneach-an Clár-Corcaigh. Féach Ó Marannáin. D'fhéadfadh an phréamh bheith i "muirneach" nó "maranach" nó, le ard-shamhlaíocht de Bhulbh, i Manannán Mac Lir, an muir-dhia. Deineadh Warren díobh, leis. MIF.
