Marnane | Quite numerous: Tipperary-Limerick etc. Ir. Ó Marannáin. Variant of Murnane, q.v. |
Murnane | fairly numerous: Limerick-Clare-Cork etc. Ir. Ó Murnáin. This may derive from muirneach, lovable, but Woulfe says it is a corruption of Manannán, otherwise the Irish sea-god. In this connection, see Marrinan. Another possible root is maranach, thoughtful. The name has, in some cases, in S W Munster become Warren, q.v. MIF. |
