Surname Dictionary

Marnane Quite numerous: Tipperary-Limerick etc. Ir. Ó Marannáin. Variant of Murnane, q.v.
Marrinan nod.nos.: Clare etc. Ir. Ó Marannáin. See also Murnane & Mannering.
Murnane fairly numerous: Limerick-Clare-Cork etc. Ir. Ó Murnáin. This may derive from muirneach, lovable, but Woulfe says it is a corruption of Manannán, otherwise the Irish sea-god. In this connection, see Marrinan. Another possible root is maranach, thoughtful. The name has, in some cases, in S W Munster become Warren, q.v. MIF.
Ó Marannáin Marrinan: líon beag: an Clár. Creideann Mac Giolla Iasachta go bhfuil sé seo ar aon dul le Ó Murnáin, atá forleathan sa Mhumhain. Is deacair a shamhlú go bhfuil Manannán, dia na mara, sa scéal, faoi mar atá ráite ag de Bhulbh.
