Surname Dictionary

Lane numerous: all areas, especially Cork-W Limerick-Kerry. Ir. Ó Laighin, Ó Liatháin. The former associated with Galway, the latter with Cork. In W Limerick and Kerry there is confusion with Lyne and Lyons, q.v. Woulfe says laighean means "spear", whereas Liathán is a diminutive of liath, grey. The English name is rare in Ireland.
