Surname Dictionary

Foley Very numerous: all areas, especially Munster & S E Leinster. Ir. Ó Foghladha (Foghlú), foghlaí, a robber. A Waterford name. The Foleys of Ulster may, as a result of mistrans-lation, be really MacSharrys, q.v. IF.
Fowley Quite numerous: Sligo-Leitrim. Ir. Ó Foghladha (Foghlú). A variant of Foley in Connacht.
Ó Foghladha Foley: an-líonmhar: Cúige Mumhan, deisceart Laighean, Connachta. Clann a thosnaigh i bPort Lairge agus a scaipeadh tríd an Mumhain & rl. Is cosúil go dtagann an sloinne ón bhfocal foghlú .i. creachadh. An litriú nua: Ó Foghlú. IF.
