Surname Dictionary

Nolan Very numerous: all areas, especially South East. Ir. Ó Nualláin, from nuall, a cry, clamour. (1) A sept of Carlow, who had the office of inaugurating the king of Leinster. (2) a sept of S W Cork. SI & IF.
Nowlan Quite numerous: Dublin etc. Variant of Nolan, q.v.
Ó Nuallain Nolan: an-líonmhar tríd an dtír, sa Oir-dheisceart ach go h-áirithe. Clann tábhachtach i gCúige Laighean roimh an Ionradh - bhí sé de dhualghas acu rí Laighean a inshealbhú. Bhí siad lonnaithe sa cheantar Fothartha Fea i gCeatharlach. Sa 16 céad cuireadh craobh díobh go Connachta agus cheap de Bhulbh gur Mac Nualláin a bhí ar a sliocht ach ní dóigh liom go raibh an ceart aige annsan. Cialaíonn nuall glao - glao caointe go sonrach - b'fhéidir go bhfuil fréamh an tsloinne ársa seo ansin. SGG & IF.
O'Nolan fairly rare: Limerick etc. Ir. Ó Nualláin, nuall, short. See Nolan.
