Carney | numerous: Connacht, particularly Mayo, Fermanagh, Tyrone, N Leinster. Ir. Mac Cearnaigh and Ó Cearnaigh. The former was of Meath, now mainly in Ulster, the latter was a sept of Uí Fiachrach (Mayo). Some confusion with Kearney, q.v. SI. |

Kearney | Very numerous: all areas: Ir. Ó Catharnaigh (Meath); Ó Cearnaigh (Connacht). The head of the Meath family was known as An Sionnach (The Fox) and many of them became known as Fox. There was also a sept Ó Cearnaigh (cearnach, victorious) in Tipperary which explains the wide distribution. IF & SGG. |
