Surname Dictionary

Monaghan Very numerous: Leath Chuinn (Northern Half). Ir. Ó Monacháin. Dimin. of manach, a monk. A sept of Roscommon with probably another in Oriel (Armagh, Monaghan etc) but no connection with the county, which is Muineachán.
Monahan numerous: all areas, especially Cavan-Monaghan-Louth, Midlands, Galway, Donegal. Ir. Ó Monacháin, as Monaghan.
Ó Manacháin Monaghan: an-líonmhar: Leath Chuinn: Cabhán-Muineachán-Lú go sonrach. Bhí clann amháin lonnaithe i Ros Comáin, cois Sionainne. Is cosúil go raibh ceann eile in Oirghialla. Ón ainm Manchán, díspeagadh ar "manach".
