Surname Dictionary

Maloney numerous: all provinces, especially Connacht. Ir. Ó Maoldhomhnaigh, servant of the church. A variant of Moloney, q.v.
Moloney Very numerous: all areas except Ulster. Ir. Ó Maoldhomhnaigh (servant of the church). A sept of Dál gCais (Clare). IF.
Mullowney rare: Waterford-Kilkenny etc. Ir. Ó Maoldhomhnaigh. See Moloney.
Ó Maoldhomhnaigh Moloney: an-líonmhar sa tír seachas Cúige Uladh. An chlann ba mhó díobh, bhain siad le Dál gCais agus iad lonnaithe ag Cill t-Seanáin, an Tulach, sa Chlár. Bhí cáil ar Sheán Ó Maoldhomhnaigh (1617-1702), easpag Chill Dalua, mar fhear léinn in Ollscoil Pháras. Ciallaíonn domhnach (1) an Tiarna (2) an chéad lá den t-seachtain agus (3) cill nó eaglais a tógadh sa luath-aois agus luaite le Pádraig N. Ceaptar gur "seirbhíseach na h-eaglaise" atá i gceist annso.
