Surname Dictionary

Kean fairly rare: Down & scattered. See Keane.
Keane Very numerous: all areas, especially Munster. Ir. Ó Catháin, Ó Céin. The former is general in Munster; the latter relates to Waterford. Evidently distinct from the Ulster group, although Woulfe refers to a branch of the Derry sept in Clare. SI & SGG.
Keen rare: Down. Possibly English, also a variant of Keane, q.v. DOS.
Mac Aodháin Keane: ? líonmhar sa tír, ach ní ag freagairt don sloinne Gaelach sa a fuair de Bhulbh i gConnacht. Aodhán - díspeagadh ar Aodh a chiallaíonn "lasair". SGG.
Mac Catháin Keane: líonmhar go forleathan ach baineann an sloinne seo leis an gClár mar a raibh siad ina gcomharbaí ar N Seanán ag Inis Cathaigh.SGG.
Ó Catháin Quite numerous: scattered. Ir.Lang. See Kane, Keane.
Ó Catháin Kane, Keane: an-líonmhar ar fud na tíre. (1) Clann de Chinéal Eoghain (Doire), (2) Clann d'Uí Fiachrach (Gaillimh). Ach, sa Mhumhain, ní mór aire d'Ó Céin, q.v. IF.
O'Keane rare: scattered. Ir. Ó Catháin. Also as Ó Céin (a different name) in Waterford. See also Keane and Kane.
