Surname Dictionary

Dever fairly rare: Mayo. Ir. Ó, Mac Duibhidhir. Variant of Donegal name Diver, q.v.
Diver fairly numerous: Donegal-Derry etc. Ir. Ó Duibhidhir.(mod. Ó Duibhir). A sept of Tír Conaill also appearing as Deere. The name is cognate with O'Dwyer in the south. SI.
Dyer Quite numerous: Mayo, Belfast and scattered. An English occupational name but in Ireland usually for Mac Duibhir which commonly occurs as MacDyer. However the Dyers of Belfast may well be of English origin.
Mac Dubhuidhir (Mac)Dyer, Dyar: annamh: Tír Chonaill & rl. Tá Mac Dwyer i gCabhán. Is sloinne Sasanach Dyer, chomh maith. Fréamh: an dá dhath: dubh + odhar. Litriú nua: Mac Duibhir. Féach Ó Duibhidhir, leis. MIF.
MacDyer fairly rare: Donegal etc. Ir. Mac Duibhidhir, modern Duibhir (SGA). Compare Mac Dwyer.
