All of the record sources included in the Recordfinder were relationally connected, and organised around simple, easy-to-follow forms. For every townland, town or street throughout the island of Ireland all relevant genealogical record references were visible at the click of a button. Version 4 of the program, released in October 1999, greatly expanded the coverage of surnames, providing details of the locations, origins and variants of almost 27,000 names.

The Recordfinder reproduced in a compact automated format the expertise of a professional genealogist applied to all the major Irish genealogical reference works, to produce a detailed customised research outline. Already widely in use in Ireland, it was an essential reference tool for any library or society where researchers have an interest in Irish records.
