O'Tierney fairly rare: Down, Galway etc. Ir. Ó Tighearnaigh, tighearna, lord. There were septs in Donegal, Mayo and W Meath. See also Tierney. (Mod. Ir. Ó Tiarnaigh). In Ulster there was a cognate name: Mac Giolla Tiarnaigh. IF & SGG.
Tierney Very numerous: all areas, except Cork. In the north, they are numerous in Fermanagh-Tyrone-Derry. Ir. Ó Tighearnaigh, tighearnach, lordly. A number of septs existed: Mayo, W Meath, Donegal, but they have long been dispersed. IF.
