Neale fairly rare: Belfast area, Midlands etc. Ir. Mac Néill. According to Reaney, this name Niall, started in Ireland and did a tour of Europe before becoming a regular English name. It is also Scottish in the form Mac Neill.

O'Neill Very numerous: all areas, especially Ulster. Ir. Ó Néill, from first name Niall, derivation uncertain, though Woulfe gives "champion". They were the leading sept of Cinéal Eoghain in Ulster. There were other septs in Thomond, S Leinster and the Déise (Waterford). IF & SGG.
