Surname Dictionary

Gavaghan Quite numerous: Mayo-Sligo, S Down. Ir. Ó Gáibhtheacháin, (gáibhtheach, ostentatious). A sept of Uí Fiachrach (Mayo). Spoken language: Ó Gácháin, hence the form Gaughan, q.v. SI & SGG.
Gavigan fairly numerous: Midlands, Roscommon, Donegal. Ir. Ó Gáibhtheacháin. This is now spelled Ó Gáibheacháin. (gáifeach means both flamboyant and terrible in the sense of "dangerous"). In Ulster we find the name MacGavigan, q.v.
