Surname Dictionary

Geary numerous: Cork-Limerick, Belfast. Ir. Ó Gadhra, gadhar, a hound. Originally a sept of N Connacht where they go under O'Gara, q.v. Some of them settled in Munster in 16 cent. They also appear as Guiry. SI & SGG.
MacGeary Quite numerous: Tyrone etc. Ir. Ó Gadhra (O'Gara) or variant of Mac Garry, q.v.
