Surname Dictionary

Gorman numerous: all areas, least in Munster. Ir. Mac Gormáin, (Ó Gormáin, much in use, is historically incorrect). Gorm = blue or dark. A sept of Laois, they were driven out during the Invasion and settled in Monaghan and Clare. Occurring mainly as O'Gorman.:
Mac Gormáin Gorman: an-líonmhar gach aird, san Oir-dheisceart agus Cúige Mumhan go sonrach. I dteacht aniar na nGael sa 19 céad, tugadh "Ó" ar na Gormánaigh in ionad "Mac" mar ba dhual. Clann iomráiteach in anallód iad: bhí siad suite i Laois aimsir an Ionraidh agus ruaigeadh siar go dtí Uí Breacáin sa Chlár iad. Bhí cáil orthu annsan ina bhféile don aos léinn. IF.
MacGorman fairly rare: Tyrone-Monaghan etc. Ir. Mac Gormáin, diminutive of gorm, blue. A sept of Laois, they were driven to W Clare, where they occur as Gorman or O'Gorman. MacLysaght says that some of the original sept went to Monaghan and they seem to have retained the correct version, i.e. Mac Gorman. IF.
Ó Gormáin O'Gorman: ní mór a aithint gur Mac Gormáin a ba chóir a bheith ar an gcuid is mó de mhuintir Ghormáin. Leis an meascadh sa, ní féidir mórán a rá faoin sloinne seo.
O'Gorman Very numerous: all areas, mainly South East and Munster. Ir. Mac Gormáin, gorm, blue, dark. A case of the wrong prefix being resumed during the Gaelic revival. See also Gorman and Mac Gorman. IF.
