Lysaght Quite numerous: Clare-Limerick etc. Ir. Mac Giolla Iasachta. Edward MacLysaght, the major authority on Irish surnames, explains the name as "loaned youth". The transfer of a boy to another family was common under the fosterage custom of ancient Ireland. IF.

MacLysaght Very rare: Dublin, Clare. Ir. Mac Giolla Iasachta "son of the strange youth". Possibly an O'Brien who was fostered with another sept. Always identified with Clare. Notable in the person of Edward Mac Lysaght, first Chief Herald of Ireland and major authority on surnames. More common under Lysaght, q.v.
