Surname Dictionary

Fuery rare: Galway-Mayo, Donegal. Ir. Ó Forreith (Annals), now Ó Fiúra. See Fury.
Furey fairly numerous: Galway etc. Ir. Ó Forréidh (SGA), spoken language: Ó Fiúra. Originally a sept of W Meath, related to the royal house of O'Melaghlin, they moved to Galway in 17 cent. Woulfe gives the Irish as Ó Fiodhabhra (bushy-eyebrow). This name also occurs as Feore, q.v. MIF & SGG.
