Surname Dictionary

Folan fairly numerous: Conamara etc. Ir. Ó Fualáin? A name long associated with Galway, it may be cognate with Ó Faoláin, which belongs to the South East. Woulfe gives the Irish as Mac Fhualáin, Mac Faoláin, Ó Cualáin (spoken language). Further, a brehon family Mac Fualáin did exist in Galway. Although fual means urine, it would appear that Ó Fualáin is the most likely original. SI,MIF & SGG.
Mac Fhualáin Folan: Clann bhreithiúna i gConamara. Féach Ó Cualáin.
Ó Cualáin Folan: annamh: Conamara. Dúirt T. Ó Máille gur de bhunadh Lochlannach iad, ach bhí clann bhreithiúna, Mac Fhualáin, i gConamara agus molann Mac Giolla Iasachta an leagan Ó Fualláin. Tá meascán mearaí annsa. Is ar éigin go bhfuil an leacht pearsanta fual i gceist.MIF & SGG.
