Surname Dictionary

Dornan numerous: Down. Ir. Ó Dornáin, dorn, a fist. See also Durnin.MIF.
Durnin Quite numerous: Louth, Fermanagh. Ir. Ó Duirnín, from dorn, a fist. By a strange mistranslation, it has become Cuffe in some cases. Durnion and Durneen also occur. See Dornan. MIF.
Durning rare: Donegal. Probably a synonym of Durnin, just possibly English from 17 cent.
Ó Doirnín Durnin, Durnian & rl: líon beag: Fear Manach, Lú & rl. In oirthear Uladh tá meascadh le Ó Dornáin ach is cosúil den phréamh chéanna: dorn = lámh dhúnta. Féach Ó Duirnín, leis. Tugadh Cuffe orthu in Ultaibh, uaireannta. Tá clú i gcónaí ar Pheadar Ó Doirnín (c.1704-69) mar fhile. Bhain le Fiodh Conaille, Ard Macha. MIF.
