Doghery rare: Antrim etc. See Doherty.
Doherty Very numerous: W Ulster in particular but well-represented all provinces. Primarily a sept of Inishowen, Donegal. Ir. Ó Dochartaigh,(dochartach, harmful). However in Munster the name usually stands for Ó Dubhartaigh, otherwise Doorty. IF.
Dougherty numerous: Down, Antrim, Derry etc. Ir. Ó Dochartaigh. See Doherty.
Ó Dochartaigh rare: Donegal etc. Ir.Lang. See O'Doherty.
Ó Dochartaigh O'Doherty, Dougherty etc: an-líonmhar: iarthar Uladh & cuid mhaith ar fud na tíre. Tiarnaí Inis Eoghain, tráth, agus gaolmhar le Ó Domhnaill. Sa Mhumhain, ámh, tá sloinne eile i gceist: Ó Dubhartaigh - tugadh Doherty orthu go forleathan. IF.
O'Doherty numerous: all areas, especially W Ulster, N Munster. Ir. Ó Dochartaigh, dochartach, hurtful. A sept of Donegal, related to the O'Donnells. The Munster O'Dohertys are probably Ó Dubhartaigh, of which there were groups in Tipperary and W Cork. This survives as Doorty, which is close to the original. IF & SGG.
