Surname Dictionary

Cleary Very numerous: all areas, especially Wexford, Waterford,Tipperary, Limerick etc. Ir. Ó Cléirigh. Originally of Galway, the sept was dispersed in 13 cent and some settled in Donegal where they enjoyed fame as scholars. Name is often anglicised Clarke, q.v.
Ó Cléirigh Quite numerous: Dublin etc. Ir.Lang. See Cleary.
Ó Cléirigh Cleary, Clarke: an-líonmhar sa tír: tá Clarke i dtuaisceart Laighean & Connachta. Tháinigh na Cléirigh ó Chléireach de shliocht Ghuaire an Oinigh & bhain siad le Cill Mac Duach nó Aidhne i ndeisceart na Gaillimhe. Scaipeadh iad sa 13 céad agus fuair cuid acu dídean i dTír Conaill mar scríobhaithe ag na Domhnallaigh. Is mar sin a bhí siad páirteach in Annála Ríocht Éireann. Tháinig an sloinne i bhfeidhm i lár an 10 céad - an ceann ba luaithe sa tír, ceaptar. Tá an sloinne Sasanach Clarke ann, leis, ach tuairimíonn Mac Giolla Iasachta gur lú iad ná na cinn dúchasacha.IF.
O'Clery Very rare: Belfast area. Curious as English translation added to Irish surname.
