Surname Dictionary

Claffey Quite numerous: Midlands, Dublin etc. Ir. Mac Fhlaithimh, flaitheamh, a ruler, prince. Now usually written Mac Laithimh or corrupted to Mac Lathaigh. This has produced some strange anglicisations: MacClave (Ulster), Hand (N Leinster), Guthrie (Clare).
Mac Fhlaithimh Claffey: cuíosach líonmhar: Lár na Tíre. Flaitheamh = taoiseach. In Ultaibh, tá an leagan Mac Clave orthu agus anuas air sin, an mí-aistriú Hand.
