Surname Dictionary

Carey Very numerous: all provinces. The anglicised form of a number of Irish surnames which also occur as Keary, Kerin(s), Keighery etc. The Ir. Ó Ciardha were chiefs of Carbury, Kildare at the time of the Invasion and were dispersed. Other names quoted by Woulfe include Mac Fhiachra, Ó Ciaráin, Ó Céirín. IF.
MacCarey rare: Belfast area. Probably variant of Mac Carry, q.v.
