Carroll Very numerous: all provinces and especially Laois-Kilkenny. Ir. Ó Cearbhaill, Mac Cearbhaill. The personal name Cearbhall is thought to mean "brave in battle". MacKarel rare: Louth-Monaghan. Ir. Mac Fhearghail (SGA). From first name Fearghal, brave. Difficult to distinguish from Mac Carroll, q.v.
MacKerell rare: Belfast area. Ir. Mac Fhearghail (SGA). From first name Fearghal, brave. Some confusion with Mac Cearbhaill (Mac Carroll).
Ó Cearbhaill fairly rare: scattered: Ir.Lang. See Carroll.
